a journey of hope

a dear friend, Karl Enchelmayer, is gearing up and getting ready to embark on a great adventure, a 5,000 mile cross country bike ride, in which he hopes to raise money and awareness for the non-profit organization, AIDS Athens.

Karl is currently pursuing a volunteer position with the United States Peace Corps and hoping to receive an invitation for service in 2011. He plans to work in a health extension field with a focus on HIV/AIDS prevention, awareness, and education.

In the meantime, he’s preparing to bike across the country to promote HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness. Karl’s journey will begin in Seattle, WA on September 1, 2010, and end in Miami, FL on February 28,2011. You can follow his journey at: SEA 2 MIA

Partnering with AIDS Athens, Karl is asking for donations of one penny per mile ($50) or for one of the three segments of his trip ($17). Karl’s goal is to raise $10,000 by the end of his journey. Please help him reach his goal, to make a donation, please visit: FirstGiving/Sea2Mia

thank you for your support!

100% of the donations will go directly towards FirstGiving, who charges a 7.5% handling fee (website, online security, etc) and then 92.5% of the donation will go directly to Aids Athens

trash to treasure

you know the saying, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure…we’re gladly putting this to good use with our earth friendly market tote, made from 80% reclaimed cotton + 20% recycled plastic bottles.

with so much waste out there, and there’s a whole lot of it…trash has even made a home in our oceans, creating an island of garbage twice the size of texas (sadly, some research suggests there’s more of these floating around). it just makes sense to reuse what already exists.

according to the council for textile recycling, 25,000 tons of new textile fiber is disposed of by north american spinning mills, weavers, and fabric manufacturers each year. up to 40% of cotton grown is wasted between the time of harvest and the time of manufacturing. in the past, this waste went directly into our landfills. thanks to progressive efforts and new technology, it’s now possible to make new cotton yarn from reclaimed cotton gin waste, commercial fabric trimmings, and mills ends.

our eco tote, peace love recycle, uses the same technology. we’ve even gone a step further to help reduce waste – our totes are made with 20% recycled plastic bottles.

be kind to our planet, make the switch.

plastic facts:

  • 10 plastic bottles = 1 pound of polyester fiber
  • Recycling plastic bottles takes 8 times less energy than to produce an equivalent amount of new ones
  • 1 ton (2000 lbs) of plastic bottles recycled saves 3.8 barrels of oil
  • 1 million plastic bottles recycled saves 250 barrels of oil
  • 1 million plastic bottles recycled eliminates 180 metric tons of CO2 emissions from being released into the atmosphere
